Here’s what Utah leaders said in celebration of Memorial Day

SALT LAKE CITY — Weekend travels and celebrations came to an end for many on Monday with the start of Memorial Day, when the nation came together to honor the service men and women who fought and died for the United States.
Memorial Day was once known as Decoration Day, until a general order changed the name in 1868, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The holiday also used to take place on May 30 every year until 1971, to make sure only the best flowers in the nation would be laid on the graves of fallen soldiers.
Now, on the last Monday in May, among other ways of celebration, Utah leaders went to their social media accounts to share their thoughts on the holiday.

Gov. Spencer Cox posted to his X account to celebrate the holiday, talking about how freedom is not free.

Happy Memorial Day – Rep. Celeste Maloy
Rep. Celeste Maloy talked about how thankful she was for those who have died defending the nation.
“Today and every day, I’m grateful for our brave men and women who gave their lives defending our freedoms,” Maloy said in an X post. “Happy Memorial Day.”
We remember them with deep gratitude. – Rep. Mike Kennedy
Rep. Mike Kennedy also gave his thanks to those who gave their lives, talking about their “courage and selfless acts of valor.”

Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson also spoke about the sacrifice servicemen and women have made for the nation’s freedom.
“Today, we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” Henderson said in her X post. “Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.”
