SALT LAKE CITY — Utah is now the number one state in the nation for having equality of incomes, meaning residents are relatively equal when it comes to the distribution of income between low and high earners.

“We don’t have a lot of really high earners, and we don’t have a lot of people on the other end. We have a lot in the middle,” says Lecia Langston, Senior Economist for the Department of Workforce Services.

Estimates released late Wednesday from the U.S. Census Bureau show part of the reason for this equal distribution of income is that Utah’s median incomes are up and poverty is down, thanks to the state’s booming economy.

Langston also cites Utah not have a lot of big corporate headquarters there aren’t a lot of really high paying owners, she also notes Utah has the youngest median age in the nation which cancels out some of the top earners.
