TAYLORSVILLE — A 33-year-old man was arrested after he was found injured at Vista Elementary School in Taylorsville on Sunday. He is accused of assaulting first responders and resisting arrest.

Taylorsville police Lt. Aaron Cheshire said officers were called to the school that morning because a passerby reported someone screaming inside.

“The officers believe that he was either suffering some type of mental episode or possibly something drug-induced,” Cheshire said.

The man was found with a leg injury later determined to be from jumping off the roof.

Firefighters attempted to help the man, but Cheshire said he became aggressive and began assaulting them. The man also allegedly resisted officers as they tried to take him into custody.

The man was taken to the hospital for medical attention and later released. Cheshire said they were considering charges of resisting arrest, providing false information and assault on an officer.

Guns found at Vista Elementary

On Monday morning, a school employee found two handguns by one of the school doors.

“It was prior to school starting and prior to students arriving,” Cheshire said.

Andrea Stringham with the Granite School District said staff secured the area after making the discovery.

When the school district reviewed security footage of the area, it showed that the 33-year-old man had left the guns at the door before climbing and jumping off the roof on Sunday.

Cheshire said the footage showed about 40 minutes had lapsed between the man placing the guns at the door and the police being dispatched to check on the school.

Vista Elementary was not placed on emergency protocol on Monday, but Stringham said they had contacted parents to let them know of the situation.
