West Jordan hopes more landlords will participate in the city’s Good Landlord Program

SALT LAKE CITY — It may cost more to own a rental property in West Jordan. The City Council wants to raise their landlord fees to keep up with inflation.

The council is in the discussion phase of deciding how much they want to raise the standard fee for rental units, which currently ranges between $34 and $171, depending on the type of unit.

The council is also discussing raising the fee for the Good Landlord Program, which is currently $21 per unit.

West Jordan offers a discount to property owners who participate in its Good Landlord Program.

West Jordan City Public Information Officer Marie Magers said the program has been available for years, but it hasn’t gotten much use.

Magers said the goal is to have their fees match those of other nearby cities.

“It better falls in line with other cities and what they are charging,” she said.

Good landlord protocol

Another goal is to have more of their long-term and short-term rentals follow good landlord protocol. They hope this will help with issues like parking and property maintenance.

“If they care about their property, if they receive the right training, it works better for everyone, not just the people who are renting but (also) neighbors,” Magers said.

“… So if we just have an idea of the people who are renting out their properties in our city, and we know that they are compliant with our Good Landlord Program, I think it kind of helps everyone.”
