Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) speaks during a Breakfast and Conversation event for Utah young professionals in the tech industry at Church & State in Salt Lake City Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016.

(R-UT)

SALT LAKE CITY — In an exclusive interview with the Deseret News, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, confirmed he spoke with President Donald Trump at the White House yesterday.

Lee did not give reporter Dennis Romboy details about his conversation, but the president met with four other people, all on the short list as possible nominees to the Supreme Court.

Lee’s name was also bounced around last year before Judge Neil Gorsuch was given the nod.  Speculation is running high that some legislators within in Mr. Trump’s own party will not approve a nominee who appears to lean toward repealing Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that legalized abortion nationwide. Therefore, it’s believed the President will need a few Democratic senators to approve his choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Senator Lee reached across the aisle several times during his tenure in Congress; particularly on criminal justice and patent reform.  He’s in the middle of his second term.
