🌿 Rock or organic? Let’s talk mulch!
Taun Beddes and Maria join us from the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District Campus to check out their mulch displays and break down the pros and cons of different mulch types.
Here’s what you need to know:
🪨 Rock mulch: Long-lasting, low maintenance, great for xeriscape and permanent beds. But it absorbs and radiates heat, and won’t improve your soil over time.
🌿 Organic mulch (wood chips, bark, compost): Feeds the soil as it breaks down, retains moisture, and keeps roots cool in Utah’s brutal summers. You’ll need to replenish it, but your plants will thank you.
🔑 The golden rules:
2–4 inches deep for organic, 2–3 inches for rock
Keep it 3–6 inches away from trunks and stems, never pile it up against the plant! No mulch volcanoes! 🌋🚫
Mulch SAVES water: up to 25% less evaporation in our dry climate
