SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health reported another record-shattering day for the state, with 4,588 new COVID-19 cases Friday. The state also reports 17 Utahns have died from the virus, bringing the total to 773.

Over the last week, the state has averaged about 3,331 confirmed cases every day with a 23.6% testing positive rate.

Since Thursday, the state tested 18,378 people — bringing Friday’s single-day testing positive rate to 24.96%.

There are currently 533 hospitalized with the virus, 182 people are being treated in the ICU. Utah’s ICU capacity is 89.3%, which is considered overwhelming.

Of those who died, one was a female between the ages of 25-44 and four males between the ages of 45-64. Six of the deaths were between the ages 65-84 with another six over the age of 85.

Twelve were hospitalized at the time of death, with four not being hospitalized and one dying in a long-term care facility.

This is the highest single-day increase the state has seen since the beginning of the pandemic. The previous record was Saturday, Nov. 14 with 4,052 cases.
