SALT LAKE CITY — Utah drivers can expect to see an increase in DUI enforcement over the New Year’s holiday weekend, Utah Highway Patrol announced Wednesday. This includes a statewide DUI blitz and increased shifts on New Year’s Eve aimed to stop impaired drivers.

The increase in DUI enforcement began Dec. 16, lasting until New Year’s Day. Over this two-week period, UHP added more than 250 extra DUI shifts through 23 law enforcement agencies — mostly targeting New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“Tonight, we have an additional 50 troopers out on the road, in addition to other local law enforcement who are working extra shifts,” said UHP Trooper Chris Bishop on Thursday.

The increased enforcement is part of a larger movement called “Drive Sober or get Pulled Over,” which encourages Utahns to avoid accidents caused by impairment.

Not only will officers target drivers who seem impaired, they’ll also crack down on speeding, according to Bishop.

“Our focus with those 50+ regularly scheduled troopers is on impairment, looking for impaired drivers,” Bishop said. “We want everyone to celebrate, obviously. It’s a great time, the end of the year. But we want everyone to celebrate responsibly.”
