SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities reported an avalanche in Millcreek Canyon on Sunday. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The avalanche occurred at the top of Little Water peak on a run called Fire Water.

According to Trent Meisenheiner, an avalanche forecaster from Utah Avalanche Center, says Sunday’s avalanche was 6 to 12 feet deep and a few hundred feet wide.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) was called in to investigate the situation, over concerns that at least one person may have been caught in the avalanche. Upon arrival, the DPS flew a device over the scene that can detect skies or clothing. The DPS deemed that no one had been caught in the avalanche.

The Utah Avalanche Center reports that there have been several huge avalanches reported around the state in the last 36 hours.

Avalanche work to be done Monday

On Monday morning, Big Cottonwood Canyon SR-190 will be closed briefly for avalanche mitigation. According to the Utah Department of Transportation, this is not a full canyon closure.

Unified Police will hold traffic between mileposts 8.4 and 9.1 in the Argenta area. Monday’s closure will begin at 8:15 a.m. The highway should be reopened by 9 a.m.
