SALT LAKE CITY — Two items passed by a Utah house committee this week would give Utah lawmakers more input when it comes to bidding for the Winter Olympic Games.
Rep. Jon Hawkins, R-Pleasant Grove, has sponsored both H.B. 430 State Olympic Coordination Amendments and H.C.R. 8 Concurrent Resolution Addressing the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
Hawkins says H.C.R. 8 provides assurances about Utah’s ability to host the games to the International Olympic Committee. He said it also allows lawmakers to review any agreement made regarding the Winter Games before it’s signed by the governor.
“The legislature, through the legislative management committee, (would have) 72 hours to review the contract,” Hawkins said during a committee meeting on Tuesday.
H.B. 430 establishes a new committee of lawmakers that would oversee a second Olympic bid and, according to the bill’s fiscal note would cost about $24,000.
