SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Congressman Chris Stewart, R-Utah, endorsed Celeste Maloy, R-Utah, on Tuesday. Maloy currently serves as the congressman’s chief legal counsel.

The news comes two weeks after Stewart announced that he’d be stepping down effective Sept. 15 due to his wife’s ongoing health issues.

A press release from Maloy’s campaign includes a statement from Stewart outlining his decision to endorse her.

First, you need the humility to listen to those who you swore to protect and represent. And second, you need the courage to make hard decisions on behalf of those who you swore to protect and represent. Those pillars of service and leadership describe Celeste Maloy to her core.”

According to Maloy’s campaign website, she served as an attorney in several offices before becoming Stewart’s chief legal counsel in 2019.

A bio on her campaign site said, “In Congress, Celeste will fight to secure our border, protect our religious freedoms, defend the 2nd amendment, stop out of control spending, rein in inflation, and fight the abortion agenda.”

A special election will be held to fill Stewart’s seat on Nov. 21.
