Church member named to Supreme Court in South Korea

SALT LAKE CITY — A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been confirmed as a Justice on South Korea Supreme Court.
Youngjoon Kwon was nominated on June 9 and confirmed on July 14, according to a church news release.
Kwon, who has severed as an Area Seventy since 2020, will serve on the 14-member court for six years.
Kwon, 52, married his wife, Yeonshin Lee in 1995 in the Seoul Korea Temple. Together, they have two sons and two daughters. He was first introduced to the church in 1975 when his parents were baptized into the church.
He attended Seoul National University School of Law. Kwon passed the bar exam in 1993. He has served as a judge advocate general in the military before being appointed as a judge in the Seoul District Court in 1999.
Additionally, he holds a doctorate from Seoul National University and a master’s degree from Harvard Law School.
