Altercation at Central Utah Correctional Facility sends 5 to the hospital

GUNNISON, Utah — An altercation at the Central Utah Correctional Facility late Monday night sent five inmates to the hospital.

The Utah Department of Corrections posted on X Tuesday morning that a total of 15 incarcerated inmates were involved in the incident that included weapons. As of Tuesday afternoon, only individual remained hospitalized. 

The social media post also states that possible gang-related motives may have been the cause of the incident.

As such, the Utah Department of Corrections has issued a temporary lockdown at both the facility in Gunnison and the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City. The lockdown is to ensure the security and safety of everyone. 

Another post on X states that “Individuals will have limited movement during this period.”

It’s not clear when the lockdown will be lifted.
