WEST JORDAN, Utah — The West Jordan Fire Department and other agencies have completed a search for a possible natural gas leak near Mountain View Highway and several schools in the Jordan School District, and say they did not find a leak or other source for the smell.
When emergency officials began receiving calls from residents, the Jordan School District placed four schools on “shelter” protocol. They were:
- Copper Hills High School
- Copper Canyon Elementary
- Jordan Hills Elementary, and
- West Hills Middle School
By mid-morning, the schools returned to normal operations.
According to the Jordan School District web page, “If there is severe weather or threatening conditions outside the school, a Shelter procedure is implemented. All students and staff move to safe locations inside the building as needed.”
Deputy Fire Chief Chris Trevino said his agency worked through the morning with Dominion Energy to find a possible leak.
The smell was “pretty widespread,” he told KSL NewsRadio.
West Jordan Police Sgt. Kendall Holt said a search for the source of the odor began with nearby construction sites.
“Recently we’ve had several natural gas lines that have been struck, or other, various lines, which is fairly common in the construction world,” he said.
Deputy Chief Trevino said no evacuation orders were issued.
