Former SLC Mayor Ted Wilson dies at 84

SALT LAKE CITY — The family of former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson shared that he passed away early Thursday morning at the age of 84.
According to his family, Wilson had congestive heart failure and Parkinson’s disease. He is described as an eternal optimist who loved people who loved him back.
Wilson worked as a staff member for Congressman Wayne Owens and served as mayor during Salt Lake City’s transition from a commission to a council form of government in the 70s.
He was also the Democratic nominee for governor in 1988. Wilson also served as head of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah for several years.
Wilson is the father of Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson.
Utah honors Ted Wilson and his service
Gov. Spencer Cox ordered that the flags be flown at half mast in Wilson’s honor. Cox also issued a statement that read, “Ted always put people over politics.”
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall made a post in Wilson’s honor on social media, thanking him for his mentorship and friendship.
The Salt Lake Chamber issued a statement from its President and CEO, Derek Miller.
“Not only did he have a profound mark on the city of Salt Lake, but on Utah as a whole. Ted was a key player in securing Salt Lake City’s bid for the 2002 Winter Games and revitalizing downtown, both of which have made lasting impacts that stand strong, even today. We thank him for this leadership. He will be remembered as a champion of progress for our great state,” Miller’s statement read in part.
