SALT LAKE CITY — We’ve finally reached rock bottom. Four years after we all gave up on fashion, four years after a pandemic left us embracing the ever-expanding elastic waistband.
The unthinkable has finally happened in the world of fashion. And I hate to even use the word “fashion” to describe this newest trend. It’s a marriage of good and bad. An attempt to melt together what barely passes as respectable, to something reprehensible and the result is repulsive.
Now taking fashion Tik Tok by storm, sweatpant–jeans. Not jeans that stretch a little. We’re talking full-on sweatpants that look like… distressed jeans. If you see someone wearing them you think they’re wearing stylish denim. But nope.
They tried this in the 1980s. Madonna was all the rage and the pants were called jeggings. Jean/leggings. They were a colossal fail. But thanks to the pandemic and our relaxed standards of what’s acceptable to wear they’re back. Even more convincing, The Wall Street Journal reports Fake Denim is a hit.
This marriage of blue jeans and sweatpants is as unholy and unnatural as peanut butter and watermelon. As donuts and buffalo sauce. And it will cost you. The most popular women’s sweatpant-jeans are sold online by Rag and Bone. $225.
That’s the price when you stop caring about what you’re wearing.
