HERRIMAN, Utah — A Herriman stabbing killed one 16-year-old on Wednesday. He was found in the driver’s seat of a car on 14800 South Breckenbauer Drive.
Police are treating the Herriman stabbing as a homicide and say it was an isolated incident. In a statement on X, police said they will not be releasing the name of the victim due to his age.
The statement said that officers also found several uninvolved witnesses at the scene. The witnesses said a fight had occurred between several people.
According to witnesses, “several” of those involved fled the scene in a white Audi car.
White Audi connected to suspects
Police were able to connect the car to likely suspects.
The investigation led them to 13643 S. Daggerwing Way in Riverton. They found the white Audi at the home.
The white Audi was seized as evidence. Police contacted the South Valley SWAT team, per the statement.
The SWAT team was called in due to “the nature of the incident and the history of the [suspects.]” Additionally, the statement posted to X said there had been a “weapons history” at the residence.
The SWAT team detained several people who police said were cooperative.
Two of the detained individuals were confirmed to have involvement. One was a 15-year-old male and the other a 48-year-old female.
Two other people who were involved had been taken to the hospital by family members. According to police, they had non-life threatening injuries.
Responding officers went to the hospital and detained them, per the statement.
Another suspect, an unidentified 18-year-old male, fled the scene. He later turned himself in, according to Herriman Police.
Police believe there was a confrontation
According to the statement, police believe that there was a confrontation. There have been “other documented issues” between people who were involved.
There is not yet any knowledge of who actually stabbed the victim, but it “does appear to be a targeted incident — [the victim and the suspects] do have a history with each other,” said Herriman Deputy Chief Cody Stromberg.
One of the suspects was identified as 19-year-old Keith McClendon, a student at Mountain Ridge High School. Police said he was detained at the scene of the initial incident.
McClendon has since been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. Police said he was booked on one count of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The District Attorney’s office is currently exploring additional charges, per the statement.
None of the other people involved have been charged yet.
