HURRICANE, Utah – A new food bank in Hurricane opened yesterday, making food more accessible to Utahns in rural areas.
The Utah Food Bank has partnered up with Five County Association of Governments to open a new 9,000 square foot food pantry. The facility will also include a warehouse, and office spaces.
The new food bank comes after three pantries were opened in San Juan County. CEO of Utah Food Bank, Ginette Bott said the Hurricane pantry is to help the growing population in Washington County.
The location of the pantry will also make it easier to serve more people in the eastern Washington County.
“We serve 7,000 families since we opened in San Juan that very rural people are traveling for hours. We are in the heart of Hurricane, I think that’ll guarantee the numbers will be well above that,” said Bott.
Utah Sen. Don Ipson, R-St. George said, “This brings first class service to the people of Hurricane that don’t have a way to get to St. George.”
Along with food resources, the location will provide a variety of services associated with food insecurity.
“Usually someone who needs food, needs additional help as well. Now it’s under one roof,” said Bott.
