SALT LAKE CITY — Utah legislative leaders got a preview of the 2034 Olympics in a meeting Tuesday. This is just ahead of things becoming official.
The Games Coordination Committee got a visit today from Gov. Spencer Cox. He said those in the International Olympic Committee have noticed the support from local leaders.
“The reason we’re the only bid that’s viable right now isn’t because other places didn’t want to, they did,” Cox said. “Lots of other cities wanted to bid. Lots of other cities wanted this, but they didn’t have the political support necessary.”
He was joined by others who have been working on the bid to host another Olympics.
Frazier Bullock said the bid is ready, with just a few final touches going in before they present it to the IOC in a couple of weeks.
He says this is not a “victory lap,” yet.
“[The] victory lap will be July 24th at about 5 a.m.,” he said. “So, we’re continuing to work. Until then, we feel very good that everything’s lining up. It’s a lot of work, but the victory lap is just around the corner.”
Then the governor and others plan to head to Paris on July 24th for the final vote by the IOC executive committee.
