SALT LAKE CITY — Police say Pioneer Day celebrations and an Olympic announcement watch party will cause road closures around downtown Salt Lake City on Wednesday.

The Salt Lake City Police Department said in a press release that, “anyone living, working, or visiting Salt Lake City should expect significant and potentially lengthy road closures.”

What’s happening in SLC on Pioneer Day?

The Days of ’47 parade, Deseret News Marathon and CELEBRATE 2034 Olympic announcement watch party all take place on Wednesday morning. Locations and times for each event vary slightly but there will be a lot of overlap.

First to kick off is the Olympic announcement watch party. The event starts at 2:30 a.m. in Washington Square Park.

Next to start is the Deseret News Marathon, which has different start times and locations depending on individual races. The earliest race is the full marathon, which starts at 5:30 a.m. and begins at This is the Place Heritage Park.

Most of the races overlap with the Days of ’47 parade route.

Finally, the Days of ’47 parade kicks off at 9 a.m. at South Temple and State Street in downtown Salt Lake. It passes right by Washington Square Park and ends at Liberty Park.

What to expect downtown on Pioneer Day

“Some segments of the racecourse and parade route require 100% closure. Some of these select street closures could be in place for several hours,” the SLCPD advised.

  • The far right lane on South Temple from 200 East to 1300 East will close from 5 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • 200 East from South Temple to 900 South will completely close. The SLCPD did not give an estimate for when it would reopen.
  • 900 South from 200 East to 800 East will also close down completely. The SLCPD did not give an estimate for when it would reopen.

The Deseret News Marathon’s FAQ page includes a full list of closures affecting Salt Lake City on Wednesday.

The SLCPD advised to plan ahead, follow signage and use caution.
