SALT LAKE CITY — New research finds even small amounts of alcohol is bad for your health.

A recent New York Times report indicated that just one or two drinks a day can shrink your brain.

Dr. Tom Miller is the Chief Medical Officer at University of Utah Health. He talked with Dave and Dujanovic Wednesday morning about the risks of drinking.

“What we do know is that alcohol is toxic to organs and tissues, even in small doses, over long periods of time,” he said.

Similarly, the new study also finds the more alcohol you drink, the shorter your life span.

He also says an oft-quoted study showing that small amounts of red wine is good for your health has been debunked.

“[Physicians] can no longer entertain the idea that a moderate or small amount of alcohol intake improves health or longevity,” Dr. Miller said.

Dr. Miller says very light drinking habits will take a week or two off your lifespan. Moderate amounts will remove a couple months of living and binge drinking can shorten your lifespan by a few years. In some cases, people could lose up to five years of life.

Listen to Dave & Dujanovic weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m.
