OREM, Utah — A local band is in the quarter finals of a Rolling Stone magazine-sponsored competition. With every vote they get, they hope to help other musicians struggling through addiction.
Singer and songwriter Tyler Gould is the leader of the Tyler Gould Band. He says music has saved his life.
“Music for me, literally saved my life. I struggled with an addiction for a long time, for about 10 years of my life.”
Gould is taking this life-saving mantra and using it in a national song competition.
Rolling Stones magazine hosts the America’s Next Top Hitmaker competition.
The winners for each round of the competition is determined by votes from the public. Anyone who wants to cast more than one vote can donate money.
“There is a donation portion of the contest, people can donate to get more votes for bands. All the money accrued from that is going to a foundation called Music Cares,” Gould said.
Music Cares is a foundation to help people in the music industry struggling with addiction and heath issues.
Gould’s band is currently in second place in the quarter-finals. Voting for the quarter-finals will close Thursday, August 22.
