SALT LAKE CITY — It may still be warm outside, but this month, you may want to start thinking about getting your tires ready for winter.
The Utah Department of Transportation will have its sticker program again this year. The program gives drivers who have already had their tires approved for canyon travel a sticker that signals to law enforcement that they’re good to go.
UDOT’s South District Area Supervisor Jake Brown says especially when driving through areas like the Cottonwood Canyons, it’s best to have your tires up to date.
“You’re helping the police filter your stickers just wave you on, which will speed up traffic and prevent backups,” he said.
Most drivers will need chains on their tires when traction laws take effect, however, there are exceptions.
“If you have an all-wheel drive car and have MF tires, you are okay to go,” Brown said. “If you’re a two-wheel drive car with front-wheel drive and you have three peak tires, you are good to go.”
Right now, UDOT is looking for tire centers who will partner will them to do the inspections for the sticker program.
He said it is best to get your tires checked and up to date by October.
