SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City residents can turn in their gas-powered snow blowers for electric versions under a new clear-air initiative.
It’s an initiative that exchanges old gas-powered yard gear for a voucher toward electric versions. Salt Lake City Sustainability Department Air Quality Program Manager, Catherine Wyffels says Salt Lake City residents can apply for it next week.
“We’re each doing our part and the goal of this program is to really empower residents to be able to improve the air quality in their neighborhood,” she said.
Wyffels says things like snow blowers put out a lot of emissions and this is a way for individuals to make a difference right in their own front yards.
“These small gas-powered landscaping equipment really contributes a lot to our local airshed. Operating a gas powered snow blower for one hour emits as much emissions as driving a car for 900 miles,” she said.
This past spring, the program accepted lawn mowers, leave blowers and trimmers. They had over 700 items recycled, and they are hopeful this round is even more successful.
“Our goal is just trying to get as many of these units out of the airshed as we can in Salt Lake City,” Wyffels said.
