Touchless check-in using facial scanning arrives at Salt Lake City International Airport

SALT LAKE CITY — Travelers flying United or Delta Airlines can now check in using facial scanning technology at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Those who opt in to the programs can get through security without showing identification.
According to TSA, biometric cameras help with identity verification. These programs are optional and are meant to expedite travelers through security.
How to use facial scanning services
To use United’s TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, customers need to opt in using United’s mobile app when they arrive at the airport. Then, customers can head to the dedicated Touchless ID line, where they will take a quick photo instead of showing their boarding pass and customer ID.
Similarly, Delta’s Digital ID facial recognition identification service allows customers to skip the document process by taking a photo instead. Delta will also have a separate Touchless ID line.
To use Delta’s service, you need five things: a TSA PreCheck membership, passport information, a Known Traveler Number (KTN), a SkyMiles account, and the Fly Delta app.

According to Business Travel News, Digital ID transactions were about 75% faster than standard transactions at bag drop, and 60% faster at the standard TSA PreCheck checkpoints.
Delta Airlines launched programs using facial recognition technology at selected airports around the country starting in 2021. United Airlines began using it in 2023.
