KAMAS, Utah — A family sawmill that’s been around for 80 years in Kamas burned down Wednesday night.
Firefighters responded to a fire at Blazzard Lumber around 10 p.m. Wednesday.
South Summit Fire District Chief Scott Thorell said crews were able to keep the fire from spreading from the sawmill to the lumber storage area.
However, the mill was filled with old equipment that likely can’t be replaced.
“We were hampered by very strong south winds, had very rapid fire growth, and there was a large volume of fire on our arrival.”
The Kamas sawmill had a large amount of cut inventory but Thorell said there’s no way to process it.
“It’s really sad. It’s an 80-year business, [a] longtime family business here in Kamas. They are uninsured and are unsure what their direction will be.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
