PROVO, Utah — Dozens of Allegiant pilots picketed outside of Provo Municipal Airport Monday morning for better wages and benefits.
Allegiant Teamsters representative Captain Daniel Morgan said negotiations have been ongoing for four years. He says if they don’t reach a deal they’re happy with soon, they will go on strike.
“Allegiant pilots have voted 97.4% in favor of authorizing that strike,” Morgan said. “So if we do reach an impasse and we go through the cooling off process we will withhold our labor.”
Morgan says their pay and benefits are not at the same standard that pilots receive working for other airlines.
“We’re the only airline that doesn’t have long-term disability until age 65, and we are also the only airline that does not have industry-standard 401K retirement benefits as well,” Morgan said.
Allegiant Air has offered pilots a 50% hourly increase. But Morgan said that leaves their pilots about 20% underpaid compared to their peers at other airlines.
Despite their demonstration Monday morning, the Allegiant pilots said they are still flying Allegiant planes this week.
