Movie Show gurus Doug Wright and Steve Salles review The Courier, a spy thriller they say stacks up against the best of them.

The Courier opens in theaters across the country and stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel Brosnahan.

“This isn’t a James Bond-type spy thriller,” Wright says. “It’s much slower but definitely worth a watch.”

The Courier a ‘meat and potatoes’ spy thriller

The film is based on the real-life tale of an English businessman pulled into the drama of the Cuban missile crisis. Cumberpatch portrays the citizen-turned-spy who partners with a Soviet officer during the tense diplomatic crisis of the 1960s.

“This is playing in theaters and definitely worth a watch on the big screen,” Salles says. “It’s a real ‘meat and potatoes; type of spy thriller and pays off in a big way.”

“I give it 3 and a half, maybe even four stars,” Wright says. “It starts off a little slow but turns into one of the finest films in this genre I’ve seen in the past few years. Brosnahan and Cumberpatch are fantastically cast.”

The Courier is rated PG-13 for violence, partial nudity, brief strong language, and smoking throughout.
