SALT LAKE CITY — The Olympics gymnastics career of former University of Utah Red Rock MyKayla Skinner came to an unexpected early end in Tokyo.

Skinner, participating in the individual portion of the women’s gymnastics event, failed to qualify for any of the event finals after competing on all four apparatuses during the qualifying round Sunday. She finished 11th in the all-around with a score of 55.398.

With that, it closes the door on her gymnastics career. Last month, Skinner said she would retire after the Tokyo Games.

Olympics leave MyKayla Skinner “humbled and blessed”

MyKayla Skinner went to social media to thank her supporters Sunday after her Olympics came to an end.

“Heart broken but feeling sooo humbled and blessed for the amazing performance I had tonight! You have all brought me to tears thanks for being my biggest cheerleaders! Love u all,” Skinner wrote in her post.

Simone Biles, Skinner’s teammate on Team USA, also went to social media in support of Skinner.

“So incredibly proud of this girl right here. Thanks for always keeping gym light hearted and fun! love you! you’re amazing Ms. Olympian,” Biles wrote in her post.

The top 24 gymnasts (top two from each country) qualify for the All Around Final Thursday. Team USA will be represented in the finals by Biles and Sunisa Lee. Future University of Utah Red Rock Grace McCallum finished 13th in Sunday’s event. However, McCallum will compete later in the Games in the team portion of the gymnastics event for Team USA.

The Olympics run through Aug. 8.
