OREM, Utah — A 63-year-old man from Idaho is facing a long list of charges following a run-in with an Orem police officer following a routine traffic stop on Friday, authorities say.

According to the probable cause statement, Barry Patton, of Idaho Falls, was driving a white Dodge Avenger. He had left a Maverik at 825 North 1200 West. Police say that he left the parking lot without stopping and didn’t appear to have a license plate.

Orem police respond

After an Orem police officer initiated a traffic stop, Patton turned into the parking lot of a BJ Plumbing Supply store. He drove through the parking lot before coming to a stop.

According to the probable cause statement, before the officer could get out of his vehicle, Patton left his vehicle. He started shouting at the officer. After continuing to yell and defy the orders of the officer, Patton was taken into custody. Patton attempted to defy his arrest, so the officer pulled him to the ground to get better control of him.

When asked about his date of birth, Patton refused to cooperate with officers. He was then placed in the backseat of a patrol car where he began to strike both sides of the vehicle with various body parts, including his head, feet and elbow. Even after being told not to do it, Patton continued to strike the inside of the patrol car, according to the probable cause statement.

After discovering Patton had no driver’s license, car registration or car insurance, officers impounded the vehicle.

Prior to the vehicle being impounded, it was inventoried.

The probable cause statement says during the inventory, authorities found some leaf marijuana and a glass pipe in the car.

After complaining the handcuffs were too tight, Patton then spit out the door onto an officer.

Getting a medical clearance

Patton was then transported to Timpanogos Regional Hospital for a medical clearance as he had been taken to the ground. The probable cause statement further states that while in the patrol car, Patton allegedly made threats to the officer, his family and other officers. The probable cause statement says Patton made these threats as he continued to do damage to the patrol car.

While at the hospital, Patton allegedly made additional threats. He was also uncooperative to those rendering aid to him, according to the probable cause statement. After being medically cleared, Patton was transported to the Utah County Jail. While en route to the jail, Patton allegedly made additional threats to others and also to the officer, the probable cause statement said.

Patton was booked into the Utah County Jail under investigation for damaging a place of confinement, assault on a peace officer, propelling a substance at a peace officer, interference with an arresting officer, failure to disclose identity, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, operating a vehicle without insurance, failure to register, and no valid license.

The probable cause statement also says there is NCIC warrant out of Arizona for Patton for possession of marijuana.
