CLEARFIELD, Utah — The Clearfield City Police Department is investigating an accident Thursday night in which a vehicle crashed into a building, resulting in the death of one person.

According to police, the incident occurred at 101 North Main Street at 8:20 p.m.

Once on scene, officers were told by occupants on the fourth floor that they felt the impact of the crash. The severity of the collision also activated one of the sprinkler heads in the building to release water into the building.

First responders also found the driver of the vehicle unconscious and not breaking. Emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures on the 40-year-old man from Clearfield. He was transported to an area hospital, but later passed away from his injuries.

Police say there were no other injuries as a result of the accident.

During the preliminary investigation, police say the vehicle veered off the road at a high rate of speed and crashed into the building. Additionally, a witness told police the vehicle was traveling northbound on State Street. The witness also told authorities that the car did not make any aggressive moves or make any attempt to stop. The witness also said the vehicle did not turn with the road but went straight.

Police believe the driver either fell asleep behind the wheel or had a medical emergency. There were no signs or evidence of impairment, according to police.

The victim has not been identified.
