Salt Lake County Library’s summer reading program starts June 1

May 25, 2022, 9:00 PM

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake County Library’s summer reading program entitled “Oceans of Possibilities” will begin June 1 and will run through July 31.

The summer reading program is an ocean-themed event, for children of all ages and abilities. It offers children an opportunity to read, create, learn and play, while connecting in Salt Lake County and beyond. Books and other prices will be awarded along the way.

“When you consider the many ways people can take part in summer reading, it really is an ocean of possibilities,” said County Library Program Manager Nyssa Fleig in a press release. “Beyond reading, participants can do things like paint, sew, visit local museums and parks, play sports or board games, start new clubs, and volunteer to complete their reading records. It’s an inclusive program, with nearly infinite ways to participate.”

Those participating in the program can also take part through the County Library’s Beanstack app. The app is an interactive activity tracking program, which is both safe and secure.

Since the Salt Lake County Library’s summer reading program began, hundreds of thousands of individuals have taken part, according to a library press release.

Benefits to summer reading

The press release further states that those who have participated in the summer program have had increased imagination. Summer participants have also had improved social unity and better mental and physical health.

“Our mission is to make a positive difference in our community, and Summer Reading is a great asset for fulfilling that mission,” said County Library Director Jim Cooper in a press release. “The benefits from this program at both the micro and macro levels have received empirical support. We know summer reading programs leave positive footprints wherever they’re implemented.”
