WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Three firefighters and the 34-year-old woman they were trying to help are all recovering from injuries after a staircase collapsed in West Valley City last night.

Firefighters were called into the construction site at 1770 W. and 4100 S. to help the woman. The woman had reportedly fallen as much as two stories from some construction scaffolding.

The firefighters were making their way down some stairs with the woman when the staircase collapsed underneath them. They all fell at least one story.

One firefighter had to be flown to the hospital.

Officials did not give a specific condition for that firefighter but said their condition is improving.

“These folks go in to help someone else out and it’s tragic to see not only was that person further injured in this fall, but also our firefighters who were trying to rescue this person were injured as well,” said Roxeanne Vainuku with the West Valley City Police Department.

OSHA is investigating the accident.

KSL TV’s Lauren Steinbrecher and KSL NewsRadio’s Kira Hoffelmeyer contributed to this story.
