Davis School District is working to keep kids cool, despite record heat

FARMINGTON, Utah — The Wasatch Front has triple digits in the forecast all this week. Also happening this week? All of Utah’s public schools are back in the classroom.
So how are school districts keeping students safe?
The Davis School District says they are working to keep students as comfortable and as cool as possible, despite the heat.
Spokesperson Hailey Higgins said just two schools—Sunset Junior High and Bountiful Elementary—do not have air conditioning.
“We’re purging the air overnight. So at 4 a.m., we’re opening up the windows,” Higgins said. “We are fanning everything out and getting as much cool air as possible. You know, that free air conditioning that we can get.”
Davis District monitoring schools to help keep them cool
Higgins said the district is also monitoring every school to keep temperatures in the 70s.
“We have sensors in many, if not all of our classrooms, that can tell us the exact temperature,” Higgins said. “And if we see anything that’s spiking, we know that there’s an immediate issue and it’s at the top of our to-do list.”
The District is also hoping a bond proposal is approved by voters this November.
Part of the $475 million bond would be used to improve air conditioning at several schools. The same bond would also be used to install air conditioning at the two schools that don’t currently have it, according to Higgins.
