SALT LAKE CITY — Utah has the lowest U.S. rate of drinking, according to a new poll. The Beehive State clocked in at first for the least amount of binge drinking and alcohol consumption.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reported that roughly 95,000 people die from alcohol-related causes annually. Making it the third-highest cause of preventable death in the U.S.

NiceRX Health conducted a study to find out which states experienced the most binge drinking and alcohol-related deaths.

While Utah has the least amount of alcohol consumption, it ranks 34 on the list of alcohol-related deaths.

Of the 95,000 alcohol-related deaths, Utah saw less than 10 alcohol-related deaths per 100,000 people, compared to New Mexico’s with 34 deaths per 100,000 people, the highest in the nation.

In terms of alcoholic purchases, Alaska spends the most annually, totaling $1,165 on alcohol per person. Utah spends the least at $592 per person.

NiceRx relied on data from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Population Review and drug abuse statistics to conduct this study.

The statistics can be attributed to more underage kids drinking nationwide along with social pressures and an increase in mental health illnesses.

“For many, it’s the social aspect that has integrated this habit as an essential part of their life. However, for many others, there is a certain level of dependency on it,” said Nice RX in a press release.
