SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Avalanche Center has issued an Avalanche Warning through Saturday morning at 6 a.m.

Another winter storm is coming to the state Thursday night into Friday. The UAC says a heavy amount of new snow will create dangerous avalanche conditions in the Bear River, Wasatch and Uinta mountain ranges.

The UAC says wind-blown snow from earlier this week along with the additional new snow “will overload preexisting weaknesses in the snowpack.”

Avalanche warning

As a result, the UAC is expecting widespread avalanche activity. It also says the avalanches will either be triggered by individuals or will happen on their own.

The UAC says anyone going into the backcountry should stay away from any slope 30 degrees or steeper. Additionally, individuals in the backcountry should also avoid being under any slope 30 degrees or steeper.

Furthermore, the UAC also says to stay away from small steep slopes above terrain traps. Individuals should also stay away from other terrain features where debris can build up.

All individuals in a group should have avalanche rescue gear and understand how to use it, according to the UAC.
