PROVO, Utah — Provo City is preparing for potential flooding as the Beehive State transitions out of an especially heavy winter.

According to a press release, the city is taking precautionary measures to combat potential flooding. Preparation has already been taking place, according to Dave Decker, Provo City Public Works Director. He says the Flood Preparation Committee began meeting weekly in February.

“Since the last major flood 40 years ago, Provo has been improving its storm water system as the city continues to grow and develop,” He says in the press release. “We are currently planning and coordinating with internal and external agencies to prepare for any type of flood emergency.”

Additionally, Decker says the city has been identifying areas with the biggest flood risk and developing routes to divert water to protect Provo residents and their homes.

Decker says city crews have been working on flood prevention. He says crews have been cleaning city storm drains and clearing away vegetation and other potential clogging hazards.

“Crews will also clear the Provo River of debris impeding water flow,” Decker says. “Residents can help by keeping gutters and storm drains clear of any yard waste and garbage.”

Along with this, Provo City has sandbags in case of flooding. According to the press release, the city will notify residents of sandbag pick-up locations if flooding does occur.

“Provo City is prepared for potential flooding,” Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi says in the press release. “Our expert crews are doing the preparation work necessary to safeguard potential flood areas while being properly supplied with sandbags and equipment to quickly respond.”

Provo residents who notice flooding can contact Provo 311 or the Public Works Storm Water Division at 801-852-6700, according to the press release.
