Air quality in Utah was not good Monday, according to the director of the Utah Division of Air Quality. It's not expected to improve for a few days.

SALT LAKE CITY — Air quality was unhealthy for certain groups on Monday, and it’s likely to stay that way for the next few days.

Director of Utah Division of Air Quality Bryce Bird says smog in the Salt Lake Valley will make being outdoors for certain individuals difficult for most, if not all, of this week.

“On days where we have stagnate conditions with temperatures above 90 degrees,” Bird said. “That’s when we tend to see those afternoon peaks of ozone here in the valley.”

The KSL weather forecast says temperatures in Salt Lake City will stay above 90 degress for the remainder of the week.

Bird says during this stretch individuals should limit their driving by either carpooling or combining trips.

“The emissions that we generate from our driving cars and the paints and solvents that we use mix in the atmosphere,” he said. “And then the sunlight, in the afternoon, acts on those pollutants and forms a secondary pollutant of ozone.”

The groups of people that could be impacted by the current unhealthy air quality are the elderly and those with respiratory conditions.
