SALT LAKE CITY — Utah families will get the opportunity to cool down, and help families affected by the Maui wildfires. This weekend, a local Hawaiian shaved ice shack will do its part in helping the relief efforts.

This Saturday, Aug. 19, the Hokulia Shave Iced Shack in Draper will donate all proceeds to the American Red Cross.

Jared Jones is the owner of this location, found in the Macy’s parking lot at 1212 Draper Parkway.

“I can’t really take full credit, it was my wife who had the idea and I loved it,” Jones said. “I started reaching out to the other people in Hokulia who have their ice shacks and said ‘hey, if you want to do this with me and my wife, we’re going to do this. ‘”

Jones confirms the Tooele location will be joining them in their donations. Proceeds from the ice shack located at 324 N. Main Street will be sent to Hawaii.

Jones is a former member of the Air Force who said the devastation on the island hit him hard.

“I just feel for people who suffer,” Jones said. “I’ve been to Korea, I’ve been to Afghanistan and there’s just something in me that really feels when I see people suffer and go through a hard time.”

Jones wants people to know, they’re just trying to help out.

“We call ourselves Hawaiian shaved ice and how can a Hawaiian shaved ice [shack] just sit here and not do anything.” Jones said. “We just want people to know to come Saturday, get a delicious saved ice and know we’re going to send everything that you spend there to Hawaii to try and help out. ”
