SALT LAKE CITY — Temperatures are starting to drop in Utah. Jorgan Hofling of Dominion Energy Utah shared some tips to lower your gas bill this winter.

Hofling told KSL NewsRadio there are a variety of ways to prepare your home for colder temperatures.

“One of the things that I would really recommend is a program that we have and you’ve probably heard of it, ThermWise. It’s been around for about 17 years and it’s so, so good. It is to help customers make their homes more energy efficient.”

Hofling said making your home more energy efficient doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. First, inspect doors and windows for air leaks. They can be easily repaired by the homeowner with caulk or weather strips.

“The goal of weatherization is to make sure that all that hot air stays in and is keeping you warm. And all that cold air is staying out of your home,” Hofling said.

Second, Hofling advised keeping your house at lower temperatures, between 65 and 70 degrees. If possible, sleep with a couple of extra blankets and keep the temperatures low.

Dominion Energy Utah also offers a home energy plan. They send an expert to your home to look for possible ways for customers to save money. It costs $25 to send the expert, but if you follow the recommendations, they will credit the fee back to your natural gas bill.

Weather assistance program

The Housing & Community Development agency with the Utah Workforce service also offers a Weatherization Assistance Program for low-income families.

According to their website, households save on average 35% in their energy bills or around $583 per year. To qualify, families, the elderly and the disabled can’t earn more than 200 percent of the current federal poverty income level.
