PAYSON, Utah— An officer-involved shooting took place around 5:49 p.m. on Saturday when Police officers responded to, what they called, a critical incident near 400 N. Main St.

The incident started when two police officers responded to a shoplifting incident at Payson market, according to Sgt. Naomi Sandoval with Payson Police Department.

After the officers saw the shoplifting suspect leaving a store, they “called out to the suspect,” according to Sandoval.

That’s when police noticed the suspect had a knife. Officers were reported to have asked the man to drop the knife, but he did not listen to their commands.

According to Sandoval, one of the officers attempted to tazer the suspect. He then advanced on the officers, and that’s when Sandoval said the second officer shot the suspect.

Police said the man was given medical attention at the scene, taken to Mountainview Hospital and then flown to Provo Hospital.

Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone who witnessed the incident take place to contact the police.
