SALT LAKE CITY — Utah colleges and universities are once again asking the Utah Board of Higher Education to approve their requests for a tuition increase for next school year.

The University of Utah is seeking a 3.5 percent tuition increase. Utah State University, Southern Utah University, and Salt Lake Community College are also looking to increase tuition.

Is there any way a student or a parent could reduce tuition costs — by a lot?

Yes.

Dave and Debbie speak with University of Utah Chief Human Resources Officer Jeff Herring, who explains how the benefit program works.

Herring said after six months of full-time employment, a U. of U. employee can receive 50 percent off tuition.

Also:

  • One-half of the applicable resident or non-resident rate is for undergraduate, graduate, and some continuing education courses.
  • All undergraduate tuition-reduction benefits
  • First $5,250 of graduate tuition reduction benefits are a tax-free benefit.

“For a spouse — sometimes our spouses go together to get a graduate degree or even an undergrad degree — that’s a year wait on that,” he said.

Unmarried, dependent children (up to age 25) of current employees are eligible for tuition reduction [of 50 percent] after the employee has completed three consecutive years of full-time employment with the U. of U.

Tuition Reduction – Benefits – The University of Utah

It’s not just spouses and kids of academics working full-time at the U. of U. enjoying half-off tuition, Herring said.

“The University of Utah has got a lot of jobs. Most of our institutions are in small cities. It’s not just faculty. It’s not just in the academic sphere. We’ve got everyone from facilities crews to police officers to all sorts of trades and industries. We’re always looking for great talent,” he said.

The Utah Board of Higher Education will meet Friday (March 22) to consider all requests for a tuition increase.

Salt Lake Community College also offers tuition benefits, as does Utah State University.
