Chemical explosion in American Fork hospitalizes one, say officials

AMERICAN FORK — American Fork Fire Rescue responded to a hazardous materials incident caused by a chemical explosion on Wednesday.
On Wednesday at approximately 11:00 A.M. a call came in about an explosion at Marina Cove Storage in American Fork.
Shortly after arriving the American Fork Fire Rescue called for a hazmat response from Utah Co Special Response Team, which included Lehi Fire, Pleasant Grove Fire, and Provo Fire.
The explosion was contained to one unit and investigation has revealed an illegal operation being conducted inside. Hundreds of gallons of chemicals were being used to break down and extract precious metals. The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
One person on scene was transported to the University of Utah hospital with severe burns via AirMed. Another person was treated and released on scene.
Those involved with the illegal operation were cited but no one was arrested. Chemicals and hazards are now off site and the area is safe.
