Human remains found in black trash bag in Brigham City, police say

SALT LAKE CITY — Brigham City Police say they found human remains in a black trash bag near 2600 West Highway 13 Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 1:58 p.m., police say they received a call for a suspicious package found on the surface. After noticing the package contained human remains, police contacted the Weber County CSI unit, searched the area and collected multiple pieces of evidence.

The remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner.

Joey Sandoval, who lives near where the remains were found, told KSL TV the whole situation is “very creepy.”

“This is a small community, it’s Brigham, Corrine is right down the street, it’s even smaller. Stuff like this doesn’t really happen,” he said.

Sandoval is still processing what happened.

“It’s a body, it’s somebody’s son, somebody’s daughter,” he said.

Police say the body was in a state of decomposition, and it is likely not Matthew Johnson.

“We’ve been in contact with Cottonwood Heights Police Department, and we’re confident it’s likely not him, but we’re not ruling that out completely yet,” Brigham City Police Chief Chad Reyes said to KSL TV.

They are investigating the incident and are working to identify the victim.
