Man sets off sprinkler system causing $20,000 in property damage, police say

SALT LAKE CITY — A man was charged with causing $20,000 in property damage Saturday night after setting off a sprinkler system, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
According to the booking affidavit, police assisted the Salt Lake City Fire Department to a fire alarm in the area of 300 W. 700 S.
The SLCFD said they made contact with a man who set off the sprinkler system and jumped off his balcony.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he said he saw an unknown person standing outside his apartment for hours, according to the affidavit.
Police said he broke the sprinkler head in his apartment in an attempt to flee from the unknown person.
SLCPD described the situation as a ‘mental health crisis.’
When talking to the property manager, police said the estimated damages caused to at least two apartments were about $20,000.
The man was charged with property damage and transported to the Salt Lake County Jail.
