Plan ahead: Utah State Parks filling up fast

SALT LAKE CITY — Anyone planning a trip to one of Utah’s state parks this season should make a reservation quickly. 

Devan Chavez, deputy director of Utah State Parks, stated that campsites fill up fast, especially for Memorial Day and summer break. Chavez emphasized that this is particularly true at reservoirs like Jordanelle and Sand Hollow.

Last year, Sand Hollow State Park in Washington County had 1,530,337 visitors, while Jordanelle State Park in Wasatch County saw a total of 916,404.

However, the state parks website features a section titled “Camping This Weekend,” which displays all the campsites available on short notice.

“You may be able to still find openings on short notice in the form of reservations a couple days before or even walk-ins day of, but you shouldn’t base your entire trip on a chance like that,” Chavez said.

As the weather warms, Utah’s state parks—especially those with reservoirs—draw visitors looking to cool off.

However, Chavez warns travelers heading out soon that, while the weather may be warm, the water is still cold.
