OGDEN — A man was shot by an officer in Ogden early Tuesday morning after lunging at him with a pair of knives, according to police.
Just after 2 a.m., an officer saw the 37-year-old man walking in the road near the 2200 block of Wall Avenue, police said. The man pulled out a set of knives he had been hiding in his pockets.
Police said despite being told not to, the man lunged, prompting the officer to fire his handgun. The man was taken to a nearby hospital and was in stable condition later Tuesday morning.
Ogden police said the man’s identity would not be immediately released.
The Weber County Attorney’s Office is expected to perform an investigation on the shooting, while the officer remains on administrative leave. The Ogden Police Department noted the officer was a two-year veteran of the department, and thankfully he was uninjured.
“Police officers operate in rapidly evolving and often dangerous situations on a daily basis, consistently placing themselves in harm’s way,” OPD said. “We are proud of the professionalism and composure they demonstrate in the face of such complex and challenging circumstances.”
The shooting marked the second in the greater Salt Lake area by police within the span of a few hours, after a different man fled a traffic stop in Salt Lake City.
