SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah will start covering full tuition for Utah students whose families make less than $100,000 a year.

The scholarship is called the Utah Promise and is available to first-time students who are residents of Utah, have an unweighted high school GPA of 3.5 or higher, and whose annual family income is less than a six-figure salary.

University President Taylor Randall said they have been working on this for the past year and a half.

“Our objective with this is to make sure there is radical affordability at the University of Utah, which will increase access for families that sometimes don’t think they can afford our education,” he said.

Randall said this scholarship is thanks to many generous donors and their restructuring of their scholarship program.

“This has been one of my major objectives as a president, to make sure that Utahns, individuals graduating from Utah high schools, are able to access the excellent education at the University of Utah.”

He said this is just the first step and that there will be more changes in the future.

Interested students need to apply to the university by Dec. 1 and complete their FAFSA by Feb. 1 to qualify.
