Utah artist’s work on display in New York City ahead of basketball season

SALT LAKE CITY — Work from a Utah artist is being displayed on a national stage ahead of the upcoming NBA season.
Trent Call from Salt Lake City designed a basketball for the Utah Jazz to be on display in front of 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City. One basketball for every NBA team was selected to be shown as part of “30 Rocks at 30 Rock.”
NBC Affiliate Marketing Coordinator Julia Colendenski said the works of art are in the form of giant basketballs on top of 8-foot podiums.
“These 30 custom curated ‘rocks,’ or rock art installations, were displayed right in front, just to connect each NBA team with their artists,” Colendenski said.
She said that the art pieces would eventually be given to their respective NBA teams, meaning Jazz fans will likely be able to spot Call’s work in Salt Lake City this season.
Call has a special place in his heart for the Jazz. The Utah artist grew up watching the Jazz in the 80s and 90s. He collected basketball cards and had the opportunity to attend games where legendary announcer Hot Rod Hundley would say his famous phrase, “you gotta love it baby!”
Call’s art takes inspiration from animation, pop art, graffiti and outmoded Americana. The Utah artist is known for his sign painting, illustrations, oil paintings and murals.
