SALT LAKE CITY — The community of Price is devastated after learning that a beloved Castle Heights Elementary teacher was hit and killed by a car while leaving a staff Christmas party Wednesday night.

Price Police and school officials confirmed that 64‑year‑old Linda Garvin was hit while using a crosswalk shortly after 7 p.m. Garvin was leaving a staff Christmas party when the crash happened. She died from her injuries.

“Everyone was just walking to their cars afterward when the accident happened,” said Carbon School District Superintendent Mikah Salas. “Obviously there was staff there, witnessing the accident, so there was profound impact on them.”

Salas said the loss is also being felt deeply throughout the small town, where Garvin and her family were well known. Salas described the news as heartbreaking for students, staff, and the broader community.

“Her husband was my high school teacher. She taught my daughter in first grade. I’ve known her for decades. Her family is heavily engrained,” Salas told KSL through tears. “We’re a small town and everyone is connected deeply.”

Police said the driver was a teenage boy, and that the crash remains under investigation. Salas extended her condolences not just to the Garvin family, but to the driver and his family.

“We’re also extremely concerned about the driver of the car and the family involved on that side, because we know and love them just as much,” Salas expressed.

She said the district has activated its crisis response team. Counselors at Castle Heights and the school district are on hand to help students and employees process the loss. The families of Mrs. Garvin’s class were informed early Thursday morning so they could either stay home to process their grief or come to school and receive resources. Teachers were also given examples of how to talk to students about the news.

“We’ll be hurting for a long time,” she said. “This is a tragedy.”
